The temperatures in New York are getting cooler, the NHL and NBA seasons are getting underway and the new year is fast approaching. This means two things: Halloween costumes are flying off the shelves and so is the best part of Halloween: The candy!

Actually chocolate is having a moment for two reasons: National Chocolate Day is Oct. 28, followed quickly by Halloween on Oct. 31, when we reward those little Trick-Or-Treaters with fun-sized bits of candy goodness. And if there’s some left over after Halloween, so much the better.

The Winner In New York Is…

Give me a break, give me a break! No, we’re not asking for a recount on this chart. That’s the longtime commercial jingle for the No. 1 candy in New York, according to our research. The rest of the lyric, of course, is “Break me off a piece of that Kit Kat Bar.”

Yes, Kit Kat is the favorite in the state where New York casino apps might yet be among the treats that folks in the Empire State can partake in at some point. In second place is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, with Twix finishing third.

Kit Kat famously comes in a package of four big bars (we’re not counting mini sizes here) with the idea being to break them off and eat them one at a time. Each bar has three layers of wafer, separated by then covered in a surrounding layer of chocolate.

Kit Kat was the winner not only in New York but in 11 other states: Arizona, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont and Washington.

If this were a political convention, though, we’d have to go to another vote. That’s because Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups carried 19 states – a plurality, but not a majority. Other brands carrying at least one state were Snickers (the top choice in seven states), M&Ms (five), Milky Way (four), Twix (two) and Butterfinger (one).
